THE WINE PDOS IN GALICIA
There are no less than 5 wine PDOs in Galicia, today we bring you all of them with their different nuances. Many people only know Albariño (a type of grape), however Galicia has other great protected wines. Furthermore, the great work of local producers has elevated the white wines of the autonomous community to the world elite. Let’s start:
- Rías Baixas PDO: Albariño belongs to this PDO, the wine with the largest number of wineries in Galicia and the largest area. The data, with more than 20 million liters produced per year, are wines produced at low altitude near the sea. It is divided into five subzones (Salnés, Rosal, Condado, Soutomaior and Ribeira do Ulla), mainly in the province of Pontevedra. Finally, Albariño has come to be considered the best white wine in the world, it is a fresh and smooth wine with a certain acidity and fruity aromas.
- PDO Ribeiro: This PDO was created in 1932, being the oldest in Galicia, this wine has been produced since Roman times. With nearly 8 million liters produced per year, 85% of its production is for white wine. When producing it, all types of grapes are used such as Treixadura, Loureira, Torrontés, Albariño, Albilla or Godello. In conclusion, the white ribeiro is characterized by being clean and transparent, with shades ranging from pale to straw, with greenish reflections. On the nose, floral, fruit and balsamic aromas.
- PDO Valdeorras: Located in the eastern end of Ourense, it is a fine wine with a fruity aroma and good structure in the mouth. The use of godello for whites and mencía for reds stands out.
- PDO Ribeira Sacra: The geographical location of its vineyards generates a spectacular landscape in an area called Sacra due to the large number of monasteries. The slopes over the Miño and Sil are so vertical that the harvest process is known as heroic viticulture. This PDO highlights a wide variety of grapes such as mencía, brancellao, merenzao, tempranillo, sousón and caiño tinto, among the reds; and Albariño, Loureira, Treixadura, Godello, Doña Blanca and Torrontés among the white ones. That is, the majority of red wines are produced (85%) with ruby red, violet tones, fruity flavors and mineral notes.
- PDO Monterrei: The smallest of the Galician ones, located around the Verín area. These are fresh and fruity white wines, sweet, very powerful on the nose and pale yellow or straw in color. On the other hand, the red wines stand out for their cherry red color with purple reflections, very clean and bright, the flavor is reminiscent of forest fruits.
